Privacy policy
We keep your study data so it syncs and is backed up, we use it only to run Coursework, and we never sell it or use it for ads. You can download or delete all of it at any time.
What we collect
- Account: your email address, and your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google, Apple or ChatGPT. We never see your passwords for those services.
- Your study data: classes, assignments, due dates, notes, scores, start-time plans, study sets, flashcards, quiz questions and your review history, XP and streaks.
- Notes you turn into study sets: the text you paste, saved with the set so you can re-read it.
- School calendar sync (Pro, optional): if you connect a Canvas, iCollege (D2L), Blackboard or Moodle calendar feed, we store the feed link (it’s private to you and works like a password to that calendar) only to sync it, and we import the title and due date and time of each event as items on your plan. We check the feed when you open Coursework (at most about once an hour) or press Sync now. We never write the link to logs or share it. Disconnecting in Settings deletes the link right away; you can also choose to delete the imported items.
- Age confirmation: the date you confirmed you’re 13 or older.
- Usage needed to run the service: how many AI actions you’ve used this month (counts and token totals, not their content), and basic technical logs our providers keep for security.
- Payments: if you buy Pro on the web, Stripe collects your card details. We receive only a customer ID and your subscription status, never your card number. On iPhone, Apple handles payment.
We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and we don’t use cookies for ads. Signing in stores a session token in your browser so you stay signed in.
How we use it
Only to provide Coursework: show and sync your plan, schedule reviews, calculate XP and streaks, generate study sets when you ask, keep backups, handle billing and answer support emails. We do not sell or rent your data, and we don’t use it to train AI models.
Who processes it
- Supabase (database, sign-in, server functions; hosted in the United States) stores your account and study data.
- Anthropic (Claude) is our AI provider. It receives the notes or card text you send to the AI study coach, only when you press the button, to create the lesson, cards, quiz or explanation. Anthropic doesn’t use API data to train its models.
- Your school’s calendar service (for example Instructure Canvas or D2L) receives a request from our server when we read the feed you connected.
- Stripe processes web payments. Apple processes iPhone payments.
- Google, Apple or OpenAI confirm who you are if you choose to sign in with them.
- Cloudflare serves the website.
Backups and keeping your data safe
Access to your data is limited to your own account by database rules. We keep a nightly backup of your list for 30 days, up to 20 backups you make yourself, and a safety copy before any restore or import. Items you delete stay in the trash for 30 days, then are removed. You can download a full copy from Settings at any time.
Your choices and rights
- See and download: Settings → Backups → Download a copy (your classes, items, study sets, cards and quiz questions). Email us for a copy of your account details, XP history or AI usage counts.
- Correct: edit anything in the app.
- Delete: Settings → Delete account removes your account and all study data and backups right away, and cancels a web subscription. Copies in our providers’ own encrypted backups expire within their normal cycles.
- Questions or requests under your local privacy law (for example California’s CCPA): email us and we’ll respond within 30 days.
The iPhone app
The iPhone app (version 1.0 and later) and the website both require an account and sync your study data through our service as described above. The earlier browser-only version of the website kept its list in that browser only; importing that list into an account uploads it. After you sign in, a copy of your data may stay cached on that device so you can read it offline. Optional notifications are scheduled on your phone and never used for marketing. If you’re signed in and connect a school calendar feed (Pro), it works the same as on the web: the link is stored with your account only to sync it, and it’s never put in backup files.
Students and children
Coursework is for students 13 and older. It isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information; if you think a child under 13 has an account, email us and we’ll delete it. Coursework is an independent tool chosen by you, not a service provided by your school, and it isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by any school.
Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we’ll update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app before the change applies to data you already gave us.
